Dictation
Speak into Slack, email, docs, and other apps. Separate from meeting recording and from notes you keep in Grafite.
How it works
Install the Grafite desktop app and sign in. Click in the field you want to fill, then press ⌘⇧D on Mac or Ctrl+Shift+D on Windows. Speak. Press the shortcut again to insert the text. A small overlay shows what Grafite heard. Dictation is disabled while a meeting is recording so the microphone stays with the call.

Where people use it
If you can type there, you can usually dictate there. Typical spots:
- • Slack or Microsoft Teams chat
- • Mail, Gmail, or Outlook compose
- • Google Docs, Word, Notion, or other notes apps
- • Linear, Jira, or similar issue fields
- • Browser address bars, comments, and forms
Speech engines
Pick an engine in Settings → Intelligence. Auto uses On device — Best when the model is installed, otherwise Apple Speech on a Mac. See on-device speech for what can stay local today.
Apple Speech
Built-in macOS dictation. Low CPU, no extra download. Stays on this Mac. A good default until On device — Best finishes installing.
On device — Best
A larger speech model downloads once (~650 MB) into the desktop app and transcribes on this computer. Marked Privacy. Hardware is the limit, not billing. We are expanding how much of Grafite can run this way.
Grafite Cloud Pro
Streams dictation through Grafite Cloud Pro. Included with Professional. Same privacy stance as other Grafite cloud speech: processed to make text, not sold, not used to train AI.
Dictation vs a voice note vs a quick note
Dictation types into another app. History lives under Settings → Dictation history, not on your note timeline.
Quick note (⌘⇧N / Ctrl+Shift+N) opens a compact Grafite window and saves a written note in your account.
Quick voice note (⌘⇧V / Ctrl+Shift+V) records into Grafite with a live transcript. Same family as voice notes from the + menu.
Permissions
The desktop app needs the microphone. On a Mac, Accessibility is also required so Grafite can insert text into the frontmost app. Meeting capture still needs System Audio when you want the other side of a call. See desktop permissions, desktop app capture, and on-device speech.
