On-device speech
Some speech already runs on your computer. More of Grafite is moving that way. We are not a fully offline product yet.
The honest split
Standalone dictation apps often lead with “nothing leaves the machine.” That matters for speech. Grafite already offers that choice for meeting transcription and dictation. Summaries, Ask Grafi, and account sync still use Grafite’s cloud unless a setting says otherwise. We will keep expanding what can stay local. We will not pretend the whole product is on-device today.

What can run on this computer today
Meeting transcription
Choose Grafite Cloud, Grafite Cloud Pro, On Device, or On Device Pro. On-device options transcribe on this computer after a model is ready. On Device Pro needs at least 8 GB of memory, 4 CPU cores, and a larger one-time download.
Dictation
Apple Speech on a Mac, On Device Pro after the desktop model is installed, or Grafite Cloud Pro on Professional. Pick this in Settings → Intelligence. Dictation is paused while a meeting is recording.
What still uses the cloud
- • Smart summaries, Ask Grafi, and most search still run in Grafite’s cloud today
- • Notes, people, and tasks still sync to your Grafite account unless you change retention or export
- • Sharing a note still uses Grafite’s servers
How to choose
Open Settings → Intelligence. Grafite can suggest a starting point for this device. You can switch later. On Device is available on every plan; hardware is the limit, not billing. Grafite Cloud Pro is included with Professional.
On a Mac, Apple Speech is a light default for dictation until On Device Pro finishes installing. The desktop app is required for system-wide dictation. Meeting transcription can use On Device Pro in the browser when it is offered, or in the desktop app.
What we are building toward
The long-term direction is a real choice per function: speech, summaries, and data can live on the machine when the hardware can carry them. That work is in progress. Treat today’s on-device options as the first slice, not the finished product. When a capability is not local yet, the UI will say so instead of hiding the gap.
